You’re reading Young & Green, the group blog written by participants of GrowNYC’s Youthmarket. This network of urban farm stands is operated by neighborhood youth, supplied by local farmers, and supplies communities throughout NYC with fresh fruits and veggies. Pretty cool, huh?
THIS WEEK'S MARKET SUPERSTAR: Amaya, age 15
Amaya, our youngest superstar yet, worked at the Riverdale Youthmarket from July to November 2015. Her great attitude, willingness to learn, and natural customer service skills make her a great addition to our Young & Green lineup! Thanks, Amaya, and keep up the awesome work!
Has the market changed what you eat? In what ways? Yes! I incorporate a lot more vegetables into my diet when I can.
Do you cook at home? What’s your favorite easy meal to make and how long does it take? Yes, I like to bake eggplant. It takes around half an hour.
Do you cook for your family members? How often? I cook for my siblings, maybe once a month.
What do they think about your cooking? They love it!
Has the market affected your future job plans? How? I realized I like customer service a lot.
What have you learned about dealing with nasty weather (super hot or cold or rainy or windy)? Honestly, you just have to deal with it. When it’s hot, stay under the tents. When it’s rainy, tie the tents together and hope there’s no hole!
What’s the funniest or the most interesting thing you’ve overheard at the market? It’s interesting when customers are the ones who tell you things about the produce that you didn’t even know about.
What about dealing with tough customers? The customer is ALWAYS right.
What’s the most important question you think customers at the market should ask? Any questions about what they’re buying, like “what farm did this come from?”
What’s your favorite fruit or veggie that you tried for the first time while working at the market? Bok choy!
What’s one you’re not crazy about? Carrots, because I’m allergic.
What advice would you give someone who’s thinking about working for Youthmarket? Do it! If you enjoy it, it’s a great experience.
MORE YOUNG & GREEN!
