Celebrate the culture of agriculture & share skills (Growing! Cooking! Eating!)

Spring has Sprung and its now officially time to start on our Veggie Garden!!

We have been waiting so long to do this, Yes, I know Winter is a time for hibernation and just letting our Mother Nature take care of the Earth..

BUT hek its been a long wait! Especially when we have been watching all our special friends harvesting on the other side of the world!

And this little reminder of just how we were blessed when we lived at our “old” rented abode just makes for more excitement now that we can plant and harvest off our very OWN blessed soil.

So… FINALLY… The wait is over and its our turn!

The weather this week has also been absolute perfect and in our favour…

We have had an exceptionally dry winter this year, drier than its been in years, and with the little rain this week it has really helped with refreshing Our Homestead On The Hillside.

The soil is a little more workable which means that we can finally work our land!

Sunday found us at our most favourite garden shop Blackwood’s Home Of Gardening as we had to pick up some gorgeously rich potting soil and our special Chicken manure….

(yes although so affordable the lingering thought was – its almost time for our ‘Spring-Chicken-Adventure’ which inevitably means we wont have to purchase this anymore!! exciting times!!)

While we were there, the Brothers and my Rob found these gorgeous pair of purple gumboots!!

Too blessed I am Too beautiful…

They have them in lighter shades of blue too for only R99!! So if you looking for a pair for the up and coming (and hopefully) rainy season – get on over to

Blackwood’s Home Of Gardening and get yourself a pair!!

Once our seed box was dusted off and all the seeds inspected (and, yes, blessed )

We decided to use what we have before we ordered or bought more…

I think its a good start though, don't you??

Time to get the little beautiful miracles in waiting into the prepared blessed containers….

Here is what we have planted so far…

  • Spinach / Swiss Chard Carrots
  • Egg Plant / Aubergine / Brinjal
  • Lettuce
  • Tomato
  • Bell Pepper
  • Asparagus
  • Watermelon
  • Mixed herbs
  • Cucumber
  • Radish
  • Cauliflower

and its only the beginning

This year we decided to plant Watermelon!

We haven't done it before as our space was limited.

Now we have the space and our middle brother Joshua has decided that he will be caring for them!!

Our youngest of the brothers Garren decided that he would be our very special “Fireman”

And make sure that all the little seeds will never be in need of water!

So now the beginning of our veggie garden is full swing – how very exciting..

We are so looking forward to watching the little seeds grow…

Love the storytelling and the photos—and especially your fireman waterer. Looks like he's up to the task! And for those here in the States who might be wondering, "What? Spring?!" just a reminder that Ange and co. are in South Africa, where they're gearing up for the season as some of us begin to wind down. Ange, we'll live vicariously through you (and bookmark your ideas for our own spring to come) while we're under two feet of snow. Please keep the garden updates coming! Can't wait to hear how the watermelon turns out.
