Celebrate the culture of agriculture & share skills (Growing! Cooking! Eating!)

Hi All,

After much thought we have decided to take the plunge and buy our first 3 chicks. They are not legal in our town, but after much discussion and some soul searching, hubby and I decided that living a sustainable, secure and independent life trumped the town by-laws. We talked with our neighbors (who were all cool with it) and decided to partake in a little civil disobedience. Now we just cross our fingers I suppose :) Baby R with Leela, Veruca & Valerie :)

After doing some research, we decided on Buff Orpingtons. They are considered a duel purpose breed, are quiet, friendly and cold tolerant. They are also (supposedly) good layers through the winter. We shall see! They have been so much fun to watch and I'm really amazed at how much personality they have at only 2.5 weeks old.  Any others out there with backyard hens (illegal or otherwise)? I would love any advice as I am a total newbie :)

Hard to say who's cuter. Might be a tie. Looks like you've joined the Backyard Chickens group, which is a great place to ask questions and get answers. Good luck!

Ahhh! Cuteness overload! I envy your kid - eggs are great, but the memories she'll have abt this time - priceless! Mine are. My grandparents had chickens (I grew up in Europe), and time spent with them is one of the fondest memories. Thank you for sharing wonderful pics, and this might be a source you are looking for:

Have you given any thought to trying to get your town's bylaws changed.  There may be other people that also want backyard chickens, but are not ready to do so because of this bylaw.  Maybe someone in the backyard chicken group has been successful getting such a bylaw overturned and can give you some pointers.  More and more cities and towns are allowing backyard chickens.
