The Fairy Tale Guide to Choosing a Mattress

We spend at least a third of our lives asleep. So pray me, should we not give enough thought to how we sleep?

Amongst the many factors that contribute to quality sleep, one needs a good mattress as Michael Decker, PhD, spokesman for the Sleep Academy, avers.

There are many ways that one can use to choose a mattress, but to show how The Grimm Brothers were way ahead on this, let us see how fairy tale characters chose their sleeping equipment.

Goldilocks

You may have possibly heard the story of a little girl who broke into three bears’ house and ate some porridge, broke a chair and slept on the little bear’s bed. She first tried the three beds to get her fit. One bed was big and hard, the second was too soft but the third bed was just right, neither too soft nor too hard – it was just cosy and warm.

This is exactly what’s done at . You get help in choosing the mattress that is just right for you.

If you have been having some back pain or pain in the neck, do as Goldilocks did; go for not too hard nor too soft when choosing a mattress. Too soft and you sink in, too hard and you put too much pressure on your shoulders and on the back of your head.

Secondly, most of the conventional foam mattresses cost a tidy sum. So just like Goldilocks, don’t be ashamed to first try out your mattresses before forking out your hard earned cash. If need be, you could ask the mattress store to allow you to sleep on your mattress for about 15 -20 minutes in order to get a feel of it. Most will allow it; just ask.

Sleeping beauty

We know of the lass that was put under a spell and made to sleep for 100 years. This can only happen in a fairy tale as some of us get terrible aches and sores if we sleep continuously for over 24 hours.

Once the girl fell asleep, her parents had a special room and special bed made for her. We may not know of the nature of the bed, but we know that after waking up, she was okay – no body sores or aches.

So if you are going to be sleeping more than normal due to sickness or some incapacitation, get a waterbed or airbed if possible.

There are also foam mattresses that give very good pressure relief and due to microscopic air pockets dissipate heat well, giving a wonderful cooling effect.

Post script

In case you do not have your own mattress, and you are looking to buy one but not sure what is the best mattress for you, break your neighbour’s place –the one who just bought that triple foam queen size beauty and sleep. And when discovered, like Goldilocks, scream help and bolt out. You only live once, don’t you?
