Small Measure & Cold Antler: Favorite Homesteading Blogs

Is anyone else out there a fan of Ashley English of Small Measure or Jenna Woginrich of Cold Antler?

Ashley English is a Design*Sponge contributor and writer of books about canning, pie, chickens, bees, and dairy.  Her posts, from pie recipes to photos of her scenic woodland home, are an inspiration and source of information on a modern homesteading lifestyle.

The podcast After the Jump recently had an interview with Ashley English that explores her background and how she got involved with homesteading, the Asheville NC area where she lives,  the hipsterification of homesteading, and more. The interview is a peek into the realities of daily homesteading and how she creates a community of support and maintains a balanced life.

Ashley's blog links to the interview here.

As I was going through Ashley's blog, I came across her post about fellow homesteading heroine Jenna Woginrich of Cold Antler Farm. Jenna is a shepherdess, banjo player, and writer of the book Barnhart, a memoir about Jenna’s experiences trying to make it as a small farmer in rural New York.

Love this photo of Jenna from Ashley's article, "A Friend in Pie" about Cold Antler Farm:

Reading Jenna's (from Cold Antler) book Made From Scratch was what got me really interested in trying to grow my own food. It made me realize how far removed I am from what my grandmother did to get a meal together and made me wonder if I could ever do it.

I really like http://adventuresofathriftymama.blogspot.com/ - although Chris K. (the writer) now has a house, originally she was in a trailer park but managed to produce a lot of food in a small space. It is always an inspirational read to see how her family manages to be as self sufficient as they can with what they have to work with.
