Baltimore City has legalized mini goats!
Nigerian Dwarf Goats are highly prized for their small size, ability to produce up to two quarts of high butterfat content milk a day, and their companionable nature.
These little guys are "wethers", or castrated male goats. They come from a hobby dairy farm- the goats must be "freshened" each year so that they produce kids and then produce milk. Female goats are useful on a dairy farm, but many of the male kids are castrated. The woman that we bought these guys from said she usually sells the wethers to 4-H participants. I don't know what happens to the goats after they are raised for the 4-H show, but I imagine they are sold at auction? Likely for meat? I am curious to know, if anyone has info.
I do love goat meat, but watching these little guys play around has already started tugging at my heart strings. I'm brainstorming other ways for them to earn their keep... clearing brush in the many overgrown vacant lots around Baltimore is a good start!
