I have a confession. I am a citrus junkie living in zone 7. So despite my local-loving ways, I horde OJ like a kid raiding the halloween candy bowl. Even now that we have an apple press and 14 apple trees on the way, meaning my cup will runneth over with that earthy wonderfulness known as cider, I can't start my day without a glass of the orange stuff.
So what's a girl to do?
I've decided the best way to reconcile my beliefs and my breakfast is to find a small-scale, organic (or at least mostly organic - I don't need a USDA stamp of approval) citrus groove somewhere in Florida (as it's closer than California), that's willing to mail me their bounty. Oranges, lemons, limes, grapefruits, tangerines, tangeloos... the list goes on and on. Ideally, I'd find something like a mail order CSA/fruit of the month club, where they send me a box of whatever's good for the picking that month. And then I can eat, juice, curd and preserve to my vitamin-C lovin' heart's content.
Does such a thing exist? Do any of you homegrown-ers happen to be of the citrus variety and would totally be game for some VA cash in exchange for a few trips to FedEx with your precious fruit? Do you already order from a farm you swear by? Is it just wrong to want something you can't grow yourself?
Help! Otherwise I'll spend another winter giving money to Whole Foods for fruit that was picked weeks before, instead of helping a fellow farmer and getting the real goods at the same time.
