If you do not want to end up throwing the grocery shopping in the dustbin you need to make sure that you take steps to make sure that the fresh fruits and vegetables fresh and full of nutrition. Fresh produce can quickly deteriorate if not dealt with proper care. Creating the right storage conditions with the help of commercial refrigeration is important for maintaining the quality of fruits and vegetables.

Here are a few tips that will help you in treating the fresh produce properly and keep the vegetables and fruits in perfect condition.

Storing Foods Separately:

The storage plays a vital role in making sure that the fruits and vegetables in good condition. It is not smart to put all fruits and vegetables in the same storage space. There are certain vegetables and fruits that release ethylene which is responsible for fastening the ripening process.

If you want to keep the fresh produce then you need to know which products produce ethylene and which ones are affected by it. The foods that are responsible for producing ethylene include bananas, peaches, avocados, mangoes, tomatoes, pears, and kiwis. The foods that are sensitive to ethylene include carrots, apples, watermelons, cucumbers, green beans, and lettuce.

When you are storing the products you need to divide the products into two categories so that you can store them separately. It will increase the lifespan of the fresh produce.

Do Not Put Everything In The Fridge:

Putting food in the refrigerator seems like a smart move but when it comes to fresh produce it is not always the right option. Products like tomatoes, onions, and potatoes should never be stored in a refrigerator.

Separate Ripe and Unripe:

Before choosing a storage option for fresh produce you need to see whether it is ripe or unripe. If you the fruit is not fully ripe then you will have to leave it on the kitchen countertop so that it can ripe. But as soon as it is ripe you need to move it to the refrigerator otherwise they will go bad. Putting ripe and unripe produce is not good for the quality of the fresh produce.

Storing Citrus Fruits:

The citrus fruits should be stored in a dark and cool place. Putting citrus fruits in direct sunlight is never a good idea because it will ruin it quickly. Storing them away from direct sunlight will make sure that the citrus fruits in good condition for a long time. If you are putting them in a refrigerator you should first put them in a mesh bag.

Get Rid of Spoiled Produce:

If you notice a vegetable or fruit that shows signs of degradation then make sure that you take it out before storing the produce. One bad fruit can increase the speed of spoilage.

Wrap the Leafy Greens:

Leafy greens lose freshness pretty quickly. If you want them to stay fresh until you use them you should dry them and store them in a tightly sealed plastic bag.
