5 Waterborne Diseases That You Must Be Wary Of

Polluted water is one of the leading causes of various health hazards. The waste from industries, homes, etc. all goes into the water bodies which are the main source of water. When a human body comes into contact with contaminated water, it gets afflicted with water-borne diseases. There are many impurities in the water which can cause harmful diseases such as germs and microbes, dissolved salts like sodium, magnesium and sulfates, chemicals like chlorine, fluoride, arsenic, lead, and mercury. Even one of these impurities is enough to make you sick.

Here are some of the life-threatening diseases that are caused by these pollutants:

 1. Cholera

Cholera is a waterborne disease caused by bacteria which is present in polluted water. Cholera is an infection in the small intestine. Some of its symptoms are dehydration, stomach upset, diarrhoea.  This can be prevented by consuming safe and pure water from the water purifier, proper sanitation and hygienic behaviour which includes food hygiene.

2. Typhoid

Typhoid is a bacterial infection caused either by drinking contaminated water or consuming food that has been made or washed by contaminated water. Symptoms of typhoid are high fever, vomiting, weakness, body pain or sometimes internal bleeding. It can be cured by antibiotic treatment and hospitalization in some cases. The person suffering from typhoid should eat light food with no oil and fewer spices in it. And the patient should take complete bed rest.

3. Ulcers

An ulcer is the most common disease and many people do not know the real reason behind this is the intake of impure water. There are two types of ulcers; stomach ulcers which are also called gastric ulcers, these are painful sores in the stomach lines, caused by drinking impure water. Mouth ulcers occur when the stomach is upset due to consuming impure water. If your ulcers are caused by bacterial infection antibiotics may work or medicines that slow down the production of acid in the stomach.

4. Hepatitis

It is usually caused by a viral infection or by the introduction of the virus in the body.

Hepatitis is an inflammatory situation of the liver. Symptoms of hepatitis are fatigue, high fever, yellowish colour of the skin and eyes or nausea. The patient of hepatitis should consult a doctor, hospitalization in some cases should stay hydrated with safe and clean water. Antibiotic treatment to cure the symptoms and antiviral medication for a longer period of time is recommended.

5. Fluorosis

Fluorosis is a chronic condition caused by intake of fluorine compounds, it is hypomineralization of the tooth enamel that is caused by excessive intake of fluoride. Fluoride is the chemical present in impure water. Discolouration of teeth, deep pits in the teeth are the things to worry as these might be the symptoms of fluorosis. This can be treated by whitening of the enamel or crowns and veneers on the teeth. You can also try bonding the tooth with enamel.

Three out of five people are affected with water-borne diseases without even realizing the reason. You should be really careful while drinking water and should only prefer drinking purified water. Therefore, would recommend installing a good water purifier at home. You should take extra care of your children as they are more sensitive to these diseases. If you notice some symptoms don't take it for granted consult a doctor as soon as possible and get a treatment. At last, you should always try to help the nature and try to save water from impurities by keeping your surroundings clean.
