I’ve always found store-bought tomato cages to be utterly unsatisfactory. First of all, there’s the aspect of price. How a garden store can reasonably charge $6.99 for a piece of cheaply soldered metal that barely holds together is beyond me. I gardened with my Grandfather as a kid, but only dabbled in gardening as an adult due to time limitations. This year I decided to try my hand at it again with a small space of 10'x6', I planted 4 tomato plants, several onions, 4 cucumbers, several hot banana peppers and 2 zuccinni. I originall purchased 4 wire tomato cages but decided to tie my own bamboo cages instead, I also built a bamboo trellace for the cucumbers. My cages were originall 4 feet high but after a lot of rain here in SE Tennessee, I had to extend them to 6 feet. I now have tomato plants over 6 feet high with blooms over eye level!
