Building a Low Tunnel

One of the biggest challenges in having a winter garden is protecting it from the weather. Most people do not live in regions where the weather is perfect all year-round. So, in order to have a winter garden, most gardeners need some level of protection for their…

If you value your time DON'T buy shredded cheese

What's wrong with shredded cheese, you ask?

Well for one, it has an additive ingredient called "non-caking" agents that are used during processing so that the cheese stays in its shredded form and doesn't combine into one big lump. Food "agents" probably aren't that healthy.

The big one is that it costs more.

So, it's a little more, right? No. It can be a lot more.

Look at the price of an 8 oz bag of shredded cheese. Then look at the price of a 2lb block of the same… Continue

Potato Harvest

It’s been warm and sunny, but the light has shifted to golden and the potatoes are ready to be dug.  After lunch, I gather the wheelbarrow, six paper  bags, a water bottle, and a few hand tools and headed down the street to the second  garden.  Three raised beds are covered with dried, crunchy old potato vines. I push them aside, plunge my hands in, and haul out a huge red potato, followed by three or four small ones, pop them  into the bag, and move onto the next…

Awe~Naturale

We most often think of spring as a starting place, a place for birth, re-birth, growth ... but I didn't get here til now, so ... I'll open my blog as I open to you at Homegrown, Sunday, Sept. 9, 2012.

I enjoy nature and it's gifts. Yesterday I had the time to go to a wooded lot (hillside) behind the house to look for Chicken of the Woods mushrooms. I just started looking for fall mushrooms. I'd never harvested any except for morels in the spring. I've been lucky for about two…

Change of seasons

Summer wind down time. 46 degrees on the old thermo this am. Amazing! One day it's summer, the next, it definitely feels like fall. Picking blackberries, harvesting grapes, making pickles from the bumper crop of Heirloom Lemon Cukes, grabbing up the daily load of sugar sweet Sungold tiny tomatoes, daily cheese batching for the aging fridge , hay making and loading into the barn for winter...it's harvest time!

Something happens when the seasons change. There's an energy in the air, a…
