We had a busy, wonderful day today.

Frank and Riley worked on a real door for the greenhouse. They hung it a little while ago and then came in to watch the rest of the golf tournament.

Yesterday, the kids had helped me fill 200 peat pots with the "tobacco/vegetable soil" that we got from the supply store. Today, I spent a couple of hours putting seeds into the pots, labeling them (until I ran out of "popsicle" sticks!), and organizing stuff around the greenhouse. Nadia… Continue

Seed Starting!

I started cool weather crops (Broccoli, Cauliflower, Spinach and 3 types of Lettuce) on Monday, and I've already got inch tall seedlings! For whatever reason, I've yet to see any cauliflower? Perhaps the seeds are too aged (they've been in the fridge for two seasons...) Last night, I started Cherry Tomato, German Chamomile, Red Hot Poker, Foxglove, Country Romance Hollyhocks and Yellow Hollyhocks!

Tomatoes 2009

I am really looking forward to getting my tomato seeds started, but I am still about one month away from the time line for here in Philly. I have five varieties of tomato seeds from Amishland Heirloom Seeds, and I will probably grow three plants of each of these varieties for a total of 15 plants. Start an ART ON THE FARM PROGRAM NEAR YOU?

Ramping up in North Carolina

We have seeds at the ready, including a bunch of donated seeds, and are getting ready to build our greenhouse. We hope to grow several hundred plants to give away if the greenhouse works out well. Our community garden will be planted this Spring, starting with two donated acres! Hopefully we can encourage a lot of local families and organizations to plant their ground and grow lots of food to give away.
