What kind of HOMEGROWN are you?
100% Homegrown
Fill in the blank:
I own my homestead
A bit about me:
I am an older woman who owns and runs her own homestead. I do it all myself 90% of the time. I have a horse, goats, rabbits, chickens, dogs, cats, a wood stove, a garden, won a chain saw and a T-post pounder for making fences. I have put terraces in a hill for my garden & grow mostly vertical so I can get more produce. Yes I can the produce. Yes I eat the rabbits, roosters too. Yummy I live in a mobile home and have a 8x24 addition a friend helped me with so I could have the wood furnace indoors to heat the house. I have windows open in the winter sometimes because it is so great to have heat and fresh air too! :)
Latest greatest meal cooked at home:
Rooster stew. I haven't known you long enough to give you the recipe. LOL
I also make egg custard regularly from the wonderful eggs. Also the french toast breakfast here is to die for. I have a $50 green house I put up 3 years ago in Spring or 2010. It stood up to a 15" snowstorm. Clearly an amazing green house. I want to put one up with cattle panel next summer.
Currently reading:
The Almond Tree a book that I won. Aslo reading my seed catalogs dreaming of planting time.
Currently listening to:
The baby monitor that is in the barn. Nanny just had twins. I want to keep up on what is going on out there. lol And while I write this A Public TV cooking show is on that I am listening to. I also always have the emergency weather radio on standby just in case.
My latest DIY project:
I framed in the end wall of the mobile home where the bay windows are and flattened it out and put in two windows so I wouldn't have to put plastic and Styrofoam up there each winter. (no I didn't take out the bays!)
I built a wall outside the barn door opening so the wind and snow wouldn't blow in there so fast and furious. It really cut down the chill.
I also fixed the frame where the wind grabbed the screen door and broke it.
My DIY projects are mostly things like Raku pottery, stained glass, wire wrap jewelry, watercolor painting Mosaics. I am an artist of sorts.

Snow, melt the snow some more.

A few days a go we got 4 inches of nice light fluffy snow. Then it melted down to wet heavy snow with slush under it. Today it snowed all day. A good 8+ inches. I have a low tech place here so I have been out the last couple days with a kids snow sled cleaning out the waste in the barn and pulling it over the hill and through the snow to the lower tier of the garden. I plan on leaving that one and the top tier fallow for a year or two.

I have had some odd tracks in the yard lately.…

Goat babies, bad weather & Horn ties

They were born the 17th of Jan., Just before the coldest part of our winter so far. We had -30 below wind chills for a couple nights in a row. But I managed to keep the chill out of the 1 room barn by keeping the 4 lights on  and having a heat lamp on in the pen with the mom & babies. I also have a seat shirt trick I do with all my  winter babies. I am uploading pictures of them now. Aren't they little cuties?

I was having a big problem with the buck just about the time…

Hi, Sue. Welcome to HOMEGROWN! My name is Jennifer, and I'm the flock tender here (site updater and tweaker, feeder and waterer of content). I’m so glad you found us—and I’m so impressed with your homestead and all of your projects! You sound way too busy to be cooking, on top of everything else, but I promise to wait for your rooster stew recipe until we know each other better. That said, if you’re willing to share your egg custard recipe, let’s talk.

I really enjoyed looking through your Pinterest page—thanks for sharing that link. I hope you’ll find plenty of projects and ideas here to spur you on, and I hope you’ll be game for sharing some of your own, too, in our member blog, The Stew. Elsewhere on HOMEGROWN, you can always find the latest additions to the site at the top of the homepage, and if you’ve ever got questions, please don't hesitate to leave a comment on my profile page or shoot me a message. I hope you feel right at home!

I will definitely be posting photos of my rabbit barn soon!! I just finished it today and we are LOVING IT!!! We have automatic waterers installed and our new hay feeders and everything is great. Got two litters due any day. I checked on em tonight at 11 right before I left for work and nothing. Spent alot of time with em today and noticed both moms are panting and stretching their bellies out on the bottom of the cage. Both are really restless their bellies are about to explode. I can feel the babies in their bellies. lol  Anyway, Ill have lots of photos and even some videos on how to install the new automatic watering system I put in for about $50. What kind of rabbits do you raise? I have new zealand and holland lops and I am looking to get some netherland dwarfs soon. Gotta add another section onto my barn first cause the first section is pretty much full lol.
