A Mild Maple Syrup Season

What a long, strange "winter" it's been here in New England. While I don't particularly mind the snow-free commutes and record-breaking, 71-degree March days, I do wonder what the mild weather means for the upcoming growing season.  Will the lack of snow negatively affect soil moisture? Will the warming trend continue through the spring and summer? WILL I EVER SKI AGAIN?!

With that said, I have noticed that one winter farm product has been affected by the weather: maple syrup.…

The Joy of Cooking

All day I think about suppertime. It seems extreme, but I love a home-cooked meal. I don't always have time for cooking, especially when I have nothing in the pantry except white rice (blah), or no time to make something substantial. But, all day, I think about the meals to be made and the desire (maybe not the motivation...) to make them.

Yesterday I was looking for a chicken noodle soup recipe. Nothing soothes the soul like soup, and a good chicken noodle…

Holiday Cookies

Last year, a HOMEGROWNer posted a Christmas Cookie Countdown recipe for chocolate-covered cherry cookies (all the best flavors baked into one).

This weekend I'll be making dozens and dozens of holiday treats - old favorites like Russian tea cakes and peanut butter Hershey kiss cookies and gingerbread and some new recipes (peppermint bark!).

What are your favorite…

I'm afraid it is pretty basic. I cannot eat yoghurt...milk products have too much iodine for my allergic old self; I make it for my husband. I use a greek yoghurt as a starter and leave it plain. People can embellish on their own with lemon curd or homemade jams. We are a corn syrup free household.

Hi Caroline! Honestly, it was with a lump in my throat that I came to HG.org this morning after being away for so long. I was worried that it may be a sad place with the random tumbleweed blowing through. I can now see that my trepidation was unnecessary - I'm truly touched - you've taken such lovely care of the place. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!
See you Monday. xo, C

Thanks for the welcome! As for snow...some of the drifts are higher than the tops of our door frame!  I'm starting some seeds indoors right now as an attempt to remind myself that spring will be here soon. I'm a little worried about my worms that are outside (in a tote farm and under a crude shelter)...but I'm not quite worried enough to wade through waist-deep snow to find out for sure! Here's hoping!
