"I planted some peas and carrots last week because the soil was loose and not too wet.  Checked yesterday and they are plumping but not sprouted yet.  Starting to see dandelions almost ready for harvest.  Started digging the parsnips…"

August is here...

This dry weather is making for extra duties!  Beans are abundant and there is no rust problems, (yet).  The guinea chicks are all over the yard with their momand so are the chicken chicks! This has been a good year to put a well in because of the dryness.  If you can get water when it is this dry then it should be a good supply for many years.  Our problem now is the well tiles are much heavier than we expected.  One Ton apiece!  So we will not be transporting them ourselves.  We are looking…See More

Sum Sum, Summertime!

Wow!  Getting cauliflower, carrots and broccoli galore from the garden.  The peas didn't set well but we get handfuls every now and then.  Planting more of them for a fall crop.  Beans are almost ready and beets are growing. We purchased a backhoe and have started the right of way into the property.  Meanwhile we fixed the bridge on the other way in that the beavers were having fun with last year.  We haven't figured out where they went to or why they left but it is less hectic with them gone…See More

The weather has been great!  The peas and carrots are up and there are plans for a gathering in July.  Projects we hope to work on are... building outdoor oven,  clearing roadway for well driller to put in well that wil utilize a solar powered pump, fencing in first pasture for foragers and of course putting a bridge across stream.  Lots of planning to do and materials to gather.See More

"Get some guinea hens.  We now have eight after going through ticks checks 5 times a day and still finding them in the home.  Guinea hens love ticks and seek them out near and far.  Some don't like how noisy they can get but as…"

"Barbara, I appreciate your gratitude. Sounds like you have a lovely bit of earth to tend. Farmers I've known have said that knowing how their land behaves is the best information to have, so your observing sounds on point. Thanks for checking…"

One year later...

Well I see it has been nearly a year since I last wrote!  Spring is early this year and a lot has already been planted.  As for the 70 acres, we have been doing a lot of observing of sectors and discovering what is growing where.  Didn't accomplish a lot last year but feel we have come a long way in understanding the uniqueness of the land we purchased.  So much of it is already just perfect.  Trying to get a feel as to how we want to fit in without disturbing too much. The back corner has a…See More

Spring is here!

Spring is here and there's much to be done outside.Wow !  What a beautiful day it was to be out!My husband and I have just purchased 70 acres and we're hoping others will be interested in sharing the space with us and creating a community of common interests and peaceful actions. So here I will share some of the things we're starting to work on and some of the plans we have.We are essentially starting from'scratch'!  Today we began to clear the way down onto the property by cutting trees and…See More

What kind of HOMEGROWN are you?
100% Homegrown
A bit about me:
Enjoy living under the sun and stars. live inside only in the drearest of situations (e.i. storms and such) Been planting seeds since I could walk. My favorite part of being a four year-old was knocking down the hay to make a room to sit in out in the field.
Latest greatest meal cooked at home:
Merely a black rice and veggie medley made from anything in reach of the stove.
Currently reading:
more than one book, a bit at a time.
Currently listening to:
The peace and quiet of the midnight hour.
My latest DIY project:
Starting up all those seedlings that will be my harvest in the coming fall.
