"This was a really great book although, for me, a tough read. I don't know what exactly it was... too much truth? His writing is easy to read and enjoyable, I just had difficulty picking it up! Cynthia, the passage you shared about death being…"

Week 2, Chapters 5-10

For this week's reading, I really enjoyed how Gene transitioned from the chapter on his mother's death to the Marble Orchards.  I've toured some cemeteries and have always felt them to be very peaceful places, somehow in touch with nature even when near a big city.  I'm not sure what I think about the permanent photographs or recorded audio messages... I've never even seen these. But here, I don't think I want to. If possible, I feel I'll stick with only visiting old cemeteries. The end of the…See More

Profile Information

Fill in the blank:
east coast transplant, future homesteader...
A bit about me:
I fell in love with food again 5 years ago, when I learned what a CSA was and joined the local food movement from central city Philadelphia. My husband and I have recently moved out to the west coast and are in the process of buying a falling down old house on 20 acres. We look forward to the adventure ahead!
Latest greatest meal cooked at home:
It's been over a month people... packing, moving cross-country and living in a temporary rental has halted any culinary ambition. I currently can only handle making water keifer and salad. I miss making homemade bread, crackers, and roasted anything.
Currently reading:
A song of ice and fire (I'm sort of embarrassed), 21st century yoga; culture, politics and practice
Currently listening to:
Bruce Hornsby... ahhh, good keys.
My latest DIY project:
Before we moved? A quilt for my friends' first daughter. Now I'm planning a garden, chicken coop and rabbit hutch. Still all on paper.

Hi, Tara. Welcome to HOMEGROWN! Jennifer here, the HOMEGROWN flock tender (site updater and tweaker, feeder and waterer of content) and your fellow Cooked book clubber. I’m so glad you found us! And, seriously, no need to be embarrassed: We all need a little Game of Thrones now and then. Congrats on your move—and fingers crossed that the rest of the process goes smoothly. I can’t wait to hear more about the falling-down house and its upkeep, not to mention the garden and the chickens and the rabbits to come. I hope you’ll find plenty of projects and ideas here to spur you on, and I hope you’ll be game for sharing more about all of your projects in our member blog, The Stew. Elsewhere on HOMEGROWN, you can always find the latest additions to the site at the top of the homepage, and if you’ve ever got questions, please don't hesitate to leave a comment on my profile page or shoot me a message. I hope you feel right at home!
