Bees

Help.  I went into my super last night, took out one frame and harvested the honey (left the rest for the winter) - woke up to check the bees and found ants infesting the inner cover.  I will go later into the super to check out the scene, but any suggestions on what to do if I find ant inside the super, etc.....

Fill in the blank:
Urban homestead work in progress
A bit about me:
I thrive in a lively brady bunch household with 5 kids, one dog, 6 chickens and 8 soon-to hatch ducklings (warmed by a broody mother hen) We have a big chaotic but beautiful and bountiful garden, fruit trees, clothesline and food dehydrator. We have enjoyed a monthly-ish "farm supper" where neighbors and friends bring dishes to share. We dream of selling homemade plum sauce and chocolate chip cookies on the street corners and overall reveling in the fact that our kids eat roasted carrot tops and crunchy kale. We hope to house bees next spring, just as the ducklings start to lay their eggs!
Latest greatest meal cooked at home:
Sourdough pizza with homemade pizza dough, roasted tomatoes, carmelized onions, pesto, potatoes and salad. All from garden.

Farm Supper

As we have delved further in to creating our own urban homestead, we started "Farm Suppers" this summer. The task was simple (we are in California, after all). Everyone coming brings a dish to share that they grew, raised, gleaned, caught, foraged, fermented, preserved, baked from scratch or picked. Homemade music and poetry and floral boquets are also allowed. We have no photo documentation for the first farm supper, but I can assure you it was wonderful. Local caught and smoked salmon (Mark… Continue

Good Morning Meredith,

I'm so glad to hear your chickens are not dying off, but seem to have returned to full health!  What a relief!

Thanks for the "add"!  I've been sort of reading down your comments list, and you are interested in so many of the same things I am.  Cheesemaking?  High on my list of things to learn!  Goat milk soap?  Same!  Sewing: I was just telling my son yesterday that I didn't want to buy the paper napkins at HEB, but wanted to stitch some up, myself, washable ones!  He was astonished.  (lol)

So, I'm glad you added me... I will read through more later.  Now, time for coffee!  Then it's off to milk.  (A whole five minute deal.)
