Square Foot Gardening

This is our first summer here and we are starting fresh with a new garden plot. We've got a little over an acre. So, we aren't cramped for space but I would like to get the most out of the garden we will have. We have a family of 6, do a lot of canning, plus give my mom and grandmother a lot of what we grow/can as well. I'm considering using the Square Foot method over the traditional row method. I'd like to hear if anyone has used the Square Foot method and what their experiences are. Any tips…See More

"Yum! Did you get the recipe out of the Ball canning book? If not, I'd love the recipe. If you don't mind sharing. My husband and kids love fried green tomatoes and pickles. So, I'm sure they would love these."

What kind of HOMEGROWN are you?
Earth Mama
A bit about me:
I can't say I was raised by really cool hippy parents, but it must have been in my blood because as a kid I always migrated towards the kids whose parents were into growing there own food, baking delicious nutty grainy breads and cooking amazing meals. I remember always wanting to hang out at their house. As I tried to find my place in a society that is consumed with stuff, I just didn't really fit in. I finally realized what was missing, a much simpler life. This is my attempt at getting that life. I live in Southeastern Indiana with my very patient husband and four kids. We just purchased a very old small farm house on 1 acre and are in the process of what seems to be a never ending renovation. In our future, I dream of fruit trees, large veggie and herb gardens, chickens, and if I can talk my husband into it another animal or two or three... he, he Now to just make that a reality.
Latest greatest meal cooked at home:
Chipotle honey lime chicken over mixed greens topped with a roasted corn and black bean salad.
Currently reading:
Mother Earth News, cooking and gardening blogs, etc. No time for books right now.
Currently listening to:
Whatever pops up on my MP3, Bob Marley, The Beatles, Jack Johnson, Eva Cassidy, Classical, Dave Matthews, Pepper, pretty much anything.
My latest DIY project:
Compost Bin
