My First Experience as a Farmer’s Market Vendor

So my friends Gene and Maggie are vendors at our local farmer’s market. They’re dairy farmers by trade, but they also grow snap peas, zucchini and tomatoes on their land that they like to take to market. It doesn’t earn them a whole lot, but they enjoy doing it and at their age, who am I to complain? This week, Gene and Maggie had to go out of state to their son’s wedding. Being the friend that I am, I volunteered to man the stall in their stead. They weren’t in danger of losing the house or…See More

"I like the smart phone card readers, it's easy to use we use and you can also email receipts. the only downside I have noticed is some cards take 4 or 5 swipes to read which can discourage some people. "

Why Every Farmer’s Market Should Accept Cell Phone Payments

A funny thing happened at the farmer’s market yesterday – I forgot to bring cash. I had totally forgotten that I gave my daughters all my cash to see a movie over the weekend and it never occurred to me to re-up at an ATM before hitting the weekly produce bazaar downtown. So imagine my surprise when I find myself standing at the checkout counter with a bag full of red onions and two whoopee pies and nothing in my wallet but plastic. But then a funnier thing happened – the merchant just whipped…See More

Softening Our Water to Save Our Plants?

In this week's edition of First World Problems - we have hard water. This isn't exactly a breaking development. We knew the house had hard water before we moved in. We didn't think it was going to be a big deal. Both my husband and I had grown up in houses with extra minerals in the water. We'd gotten accustomed to the taste and didn't consider the extra cleaning required to remove the residual scale to be a particular hardship. We had to use more detergent and clean our shower more often. So…See More

My First Farm Grown Winter Barbecue!

People in Texas have it easy. That's what I've come to realize after visiting my husband's family in the Lone Star state for a few weeks. Since we didn't get to see anyone over the holidays, we took a few days off as a family and flew to my husband's uncle's house for some good old fashioned R and R.Uncle Bob lives on a small farm in the hill country about an hour outside of Austin. It's a gorgeous place, especially considering how nice the weather is year-round.Though Uncle Bob and his wife,…See More

Getting Kids to Eat Their Vegetables: Easier Said Than Done

My husband and I love to eat healthy, fresh, organic fruits and vegetables. Unfortunately, I can't say the same for our kids. My girls, now pushing those dreaded teenage years, are finally starting to expand their palates to include salads, snap peas and hummus. However, they were absolute terrors when they were younger. As toddlers, their favorite food groups were grease and sugar - and heaven help you if you tried to get them to eat anything else.  We could get them to gnaw on carrots and…
