Is it really safe to use Organic Miracle Grow on my veggies?  I'm totally new to gardening so other than compost, I don't know how to fertilize my plants.   I'm limited to a small container garden at…Continue

"The lid pops down to lock into place just above the handles. I just roll kind of gently. So far it hasn't come off."

"This is so simple. I may have to steal your idea. I have one question, though: When you roll the barrel, how do you secure the lid? How do you keep it from coming off?"

"Good for you! This is awesome. Like you, I've seen the commercially available compost bins and decided they weren't for me. Last year for Mother's Day I had my husband and son build me one out of scrap lumber, and it sits right next…"

Trash Can Compost Bin

Since we live in a rental house, I wanted to make a compost bin that I could easily move when we buy a house. After looking at the expensive plastic barrel style models, I chose to make a compost bin out of a trash can and saved myself about $100. To mix, I simply roll the can around for a couple of minutes. In order to turn the ordinary trash can into a compost bin, all I had to do was drill holes in the bottom and sides of the can. I placed the can on bricks to allow drainage from the bottom.…See More

Introducing Myself

Hello everyone! This is my first blog which tells a little about my background and my journey to become a radical homemaker. I grew up in a small town in south Georgia. I guess it would be considered more of a farming community than anything else. My ENTIRE family grew up, and still live, in this area. Family was a huge part of my childhood. I saw my grandparents at least once a week, and went to school with my cousins. Although we lived surrounded by farms, my family never owned a farm and I…See More

"I recommend visiting a local nursery (not HD) and asking them what will work for your area and such. Look into vermicomposting too. Its not expensive to set up and the worm castings are a really awesome fertilizer. In the meantime, both seaweed and…"

Is it really safe to use Organic Miracle Grow on my veggies?  I'm totally new to gardening so other than compost, I don't know how to fertilize my plants.   I'm limited to a small container garden at this time.  Any tips would be appreciated.  Here's what I started using: http://www.scotts.com/smg/catalog/productTemplate.jsp?proId=prod10280006&itemId=cat70048 I'm also using their…See More

A bit about me:
My dream is to own a small hobby farm. I want to grow organic veggies, raise chickens, and learn a few crafting skills. I grew up in a rural area in Georgia, but have never lived/worked on a farm. This entire lifestyle is fairly new to me, but I can't seem to get enough of it! My husband and I are renting a house right now, so I'm limited to a container garden. However, next year we hope to purchase our own home with a few acres so I can really kick this new way of life into full gear.
