Chickens: to order birds or eggs?

I've sent off for a catalog, though I will most likely order online. Thing is, I can't decide if it's better to order chicks, eggs, or pullets. Well, no. Pullets cost too much to ship. So, chicks or…Continue

Progress!

Dad helped me get pallets from the co-op, so I've got enough now to cobble together a playhouse. The kid was excited, until he helped nail the pallet that was the wrong size up into what I intend to make into a vertical garden wall. I want a house made out of those bloody things - it will take ages and eons for anything to get it apart once put together! Anyhow, this first one is to determine how difficult it will be to make one for the kid, and what adjustments will need to be made for that.…See More

Much disappointment reigns

Well, 'tis depressing. Absolutely everything, save the potatoes, not planted in a container before the first part of this month is toast. And in the containers, quite a bit less than expected decided to come up. Two of the four tomato transplants are toast, two of the marigolds, & one of the hostas are toast - one of the geraniums is attempting to not die, but no telling if it will pull through or not.On the plus side, both the corns, all three of the pumpkins, the zucchini, and the…See More

"Lol, no! You get sweet tea, which is what I had. Stash Red Velvet - which you must try if you haven't yet!"

"*sighs* I'm a very bad gardener, despite the size of my gardens. I do better raising things in my old fridges and pots than I do in the ground, which is why I'm using so many more pots this year. I'm pretty sure I'll have all…"

"Yeah. The deals get better the closer to the end of the year it gets. He's been known to give away entire flats of tomatos or peppers just to make sure people who want to grow them have them - and so he doesn't have to throw them in the…"

"I think I like Janet's idea best. 15-25 chicks (the minimum order) equals a lot more birds than I actually need... and eggs might mean roosters.  Sadly, I don't live near her, so no free birds. I'll check around on who has some…"

"Sounds like you got a seriously good deal. I planted some jet stars last year and had good luck with them. Actually, I planted marigolds all around them, and they did really nicely together."

Greenhouse visitation

Went to the school greenhouse this morning. Picked up thyme, oregeno, and parsley. Got some tomatos I have forgotten the name of (I know which two they WEREN'T, which leaves Jet Star and the one I can't remember as the possibilities), and two mystery tomatos that volunteer grew in the recycled dirt the geraniums I chose were planted in. Grabbed some pretty hostas, marigolds,  and coxcombs, too.You may remember that I told you Mr. Fancher tends to give good deals. That's 2 of thyme, 2 of…See More

"I'm not actually sure about these, since I bought them with the intent to be birdseed. Peas, definitely. I've heard of sunflowers used as supports for cucumbers and various vining squashes, that's why I figured I'd give it a…"

What kind of HOMEGROWN are you?
Fill in the Blank
Fill in the blank:
I can grow weeds! Food is harder.
A bit about me:
My gardens yearly produce a vast quantity of weeds (sometimes taller than I am), and occasionally some foodstuffs. Awesome gardener, I am not.

I am, however, a decent cook.

And I would have picked "I'm a robot" from the drop-down menu below, but my programming requires frequent chocolate updates.
Latest greatest meal cooked at home:
Well... we had a grill party. Deviled eggs, banana pudding (yes, the variety with the vanilla wafers), potato salad, coleslaw (the only bought, not made, item), baked beans (the only thing that came out wrong) and from the grill: pork chops, chicken breasts, hot dogs, hamburgers, peppers, corn, asparagus, and naturally, marshmallows. I may have missed something.
Currently reading:
Actually, I am currently writing, so all the reading is the stuff I'm revising.
Currently listening to:
The furnace not coming on even though I'm cold. (It's December.)
My latest DIY project:
Ohhhh, let's see. I am debating projects. I have a fridge to turn into a raised bed, a garden to completely tear apart due to having learned most of the beds were on top of the sewer line (one was completely on it, four others ran over it), a front porch to fix, a back porch to turn into a bedroom, a chicken run to improve, a sidewalk to clear, a patio to clear... and a nap to take.

I'm awake again why?

And then, I decided I would be this awesome doer of stuff type person...

http://youtu.be/X_jQ8F2kk30

and now I am paying for it. I did finish that section of the yard, however, and most of the second section. It's all short stuff, and I couldn't really tell where I had and hadn't been. Insufficient dandelions there. The last section will probably be done with the much lighter-weight version of that bad boy.
