Oh, what a year for Growing Cities!

The end of 2011 marks a year of production on Growing Cities for Dan and I (Andrew)!  We feel so fortunate and pleased to be working on this film and can’t wait to have a final product to show everyone.  Although there is a long road ahead to reach that point we’ve really come a long way in twelve months. From dreaming of the open road and planning the itinerary last winter, to the road trip this summer, to a three-month stay in San Francisco transcribing the film – we have experienced and…See More

Hayes Valley Farm Kids

Finally catching up on the blog – its been a crazy last few weeks literally glued to our computer screens.  But we’re making progress! Here are some photos of our visit at Hayes Valley Farm – a 2.5 acre community and educational farm in the middle of San Francisco.  The farm is located on an old freeway on-ramp and when you step on the farm you can still see the where the roadway once was – although, its now covered…See More

Neither Alex Velez (pictured above with Andrew Monbouquette) nor Nikhil Arora had any idea how to grow food before they met. But in the past couple of years the two cofounders of Back to the Roots have become known as “the mushroom guys” for figuring out how to grow oyster mushrooms out of…See More

A bit about me:
Growing Cities is feature-length documentary that examines the role of urban farming in America and asks how much power it has to revitalize our cities and change the way we eat.

Growing Cities is a project of Dan Susman and Andrew Monbouquette, two friends who take a road trip across country to meet the men and women who are challenging the way this country grows and distributes its food, one vacant city lot, rooftop garden, and backyard chicken coop at a time.

Through their travels they discover that good food isn’t the only crop these urban visionaries are harvesting - they’re producing stronger and more vibrant communities, too.

Through this film they hope to inspire city dwellers across the country to join the urban agriculture movement, reinforce and strengthen existing city farming efforts that are happening all around us, and seed the next generation of sustainable farmers and eaters.

We'd love for you to join us in this journey! To find out how go to: www.growingcitiesmovie.com
Latest greatest meal cooked at home:
Mmmmm...we'll put a twist on this one. Latest and greatest *urban farmed* meal we've eaten:

It has to be the delicious potluck we had in Austin with the community of urban farmers there. From urban farmed squirrel to homegrown veggies and backyard fresh eggs, it was superb!

My latest DIY project:
This film is pretty DIY...really the only thing we've had time to work on lately. Although figuring out how to bike around San Francisco with full set of camera equipment has been pretty interesting.
