Janis Ahern replied to Erich Gottl's discussion 'Flat Eggs?' in the group Backyard Chickens
"Eggs flat on one side? The shell? If the nest doesn't have litter/straw to cushion the egg, the egg will flatten as it lays on a hard surface...Eggs are warm and pliable at first, especially with young layers. Is there enough straw in this…"

"Thanks, It sounds like a good enough theory to me too. We also get  those "ring" eggs from the same hen. Poor girl lays the biggest eggs but not always perfect. I guess hers would be rejected at the egg farm before sale. They taste…"

Flat Eggs?

Hi everyone,One of our Barred Rock hens lays eggs that are sometimes flat on one or two sides. It doesn't happen all of the time but quite often. I had assumed that the egg was already formed and hardened inside the hen's body. Am I wrong in that thought? Thanks, ErichSee More

"One possibility is that she is "more sensitive" (for my lack of a better term) to the type of feed you are using. Bugs and weeds are hard to come by right now. Does she get any supplemental grains? greens? If not, you might try…"

Digestive Help?

Hi Everyone,I suspect some of you may have experience with this messy issue. One of our three Barred Rock hens seems to have a continuing problem with her poop. Her vent is always a mess. The product is almost always too fluid and coffee-like in appearance. She seems energetic and content, but is making quite a mess of her surroundings. Any advice as far as a change of diet? Diapers are not an option! Thanks, ErichSee More
