Chicken newbie!

Hi everyone!    Greetings from California's San Joaquin Valley. My husband and I want to get started with chickens but there is SO MUCH info out there that it's a bit overwhelming. I'm interested in heirloom hens that are decent layers (being primarily vegetarian folks we're not too interested in raising and breeding them for consumption, but we would love some tasty eggs!). Are any of you familiar with a farm/hatchery in California that sells heirloom ladies? Or if not heirloom, any…See More

Homegrown weddings?

Hi y'all!    My partner just proposed to me (yay!!) and now I've begun to enter the beginnings of the planning stage. I was hoping some of you had stories from your own weddings and how you made them "homegrown". Did you make your own decorations? Did you cater your own reception (this isn't something I'm particularly keen on but if you did it successfully, let me know!)? How did you keep it earth-friendly? If you have any links to sites or recommended reading, I'd really appreciate seeing…See More

Slightly doubtful, but curious

So for the 28 years of my life, I've been pretty married to various beauty products and cosmetics, but I'm ready for a divorce. My questions are for those of you who have done/are doing the OCM and the No 'Poo hair washing:OCMers: How's it working out for you? I have sensitive skin, and am susceptible to rosacea flare ups (ouch). My skin fluctuates between oily (especially in the forehead region) to flakey and dry, which makes me think I'm just confusing the heck out of it with my various soaps…See More

Dirt Under My Fingernails City Slicker
A bit about me:
I'm learning the ropes as a 4th-generation farmer with family in California's central valley. I love my often stressful but always fascinating job, my kick-ass chef husband, my twitchy cat, learning about home remedies, hiking/camping/general digging of the outdoors, and playing in the dirt.
Latest greatest meal cooked at home:
My partner is a chef so I tend to be more of a "latest greatest meal eaten at home" kinda girl.
Currently reading:
at least three books
Currently listening to:
anything I can get my hands on
My latest DIY project:
Don't have one yet! Help me homegrown people, you're my only DIY hope.

Troubling irreconcilable paths reconciled with breakfast

There are some mornings when you wake up and it's a reasonably pleasant day and you have nothing in particular to fret about, and yet you can't shake the feeling that you have absolutely everything to fret about.

This is one of those mornings.

In about one year, my partner and I will leave the safety of the Portland's liberal bubble and head back to California where we were both raised so that I can join up with my dad and uncle and carry…
