"Barbara, I agree it looks like a Salvia. There are thousands of varieties, so which salvia would be tough. The leaves also look like catmint, which may be too strong of a flavor for the chickens. Does it have an aroma?"

Purple Flower-pond

This guy appeared at the edge of my pond in Berkeley CA. I'd love any insights as to what it is. I believe it is some kind of salvia, and thankfully it's one of the few plants (so it seems) that my chickens won't eat. Any ideas?

Hi, Barbara. Welcome to HOMEGROWN! My name is Jennifer, and I'm the flock tender here (site updater and tweaker, feeder and waterer of content). I love your self-description! Since you’re an avid gardener, please don’t be shy about posting photos of your triumphs in our new photo gallery, Hey, I Grew That! And if you're game for sharing tips on your self-watering containers, our member blog, The Stew, is a great place to do so. You can always find the latest additions to the site at the very top of the homepage, and if you’ve got questions, you can leave a comment on my profile page or email me at wehunt@farmaid.org. I’m so glad you found us and hope you feel right at home!
