"Hey Alicia, A lot of  people all over the country are having problems this year.  One issue is the heat, another is the drought (depending on where you live.)  There are a couple of things that might help you.    I do a lot…"

Depressing Yields

I square foot garden, which is a whole other sad topic that I thought I beaten when I moved my corn and squash (along with pole beans) to the south side of my yard against my house.True, the plants are 2-3 x's bigger than the past two years that I attempted them in my raised beds, but my yields are still low. I've had a neighbor and a few friends exclaim their jealousy of how much is growing, I'm embarrassed to say that really, I don't think they're doing that great.I have 2 groups of corn, one…See More

"Hi Alica:  I've been sfg for about 20 years with out too many problems and very good success.  I gave up on corn, though, because it takes up too much space, even with the 3 sisters method.  I think that part of your problem may…"

Rachel Hoff replied to Alicia Peckham's discussion 'Depressing Yields'
"The worst year of gardening yields for me was the year I tried SFG. It was horrendous. Out of 6 tomato plants we got 5 tomatoes. Seriously, 5 tomatoes.   I've also tried the 3 sisters (beans, squash and corn) with little luck. Squash and…"

Erica Strauss replied to Alicia Peckham's discussion 'Depressing Yields'
"I've never understood how non-leaf crops can really yield out on SFG spacing. I know it works for some, but the spacing guidelines have always seemed impossibly small to me. Cramped plants, with a few exceptions, just do not yield to their full…"

Fill in the blank:
Big Dreamin' Newbie
A bit about me:
I have this anxious ache to grow and save..provident living, and I have little clue how to do it. I started 6 square foot boxes in 2009 that barely produced enough produce for one really great meal. I don't know if I did something wrong or this is much harder than I imagined or the weather and animals were conspiring against me.
Latest greatest meal cooked at home:
It's been awhile with traveling for the holidays and sickness but I love making my own bread and the last one I made was a delicious Pugliese.

A compost bucket in the garage for winter.

www.locavore365.org

What is Locavore365.org? - Locavore365.org is a free site with two goals;

Firstly, to enable people anywhere in the world, find or advertise, fresh, healthy, locally produced food.

Anyone can list their produce on Locavore365, it could be someone who has few fresh herbs growing in a window pot, to farmers, fisherman, and market gardeners, who make a living producing food.

The food can be for sale, give away, or swap - it doesn't matter as long as its local!

The second goal of Locavore365.org, is to help develop and strengthen local communities - through the contact built up between friends, neighbours, and local commercial producers, selling, swapping, and giving away their fresh produce. We like to call it social networking - with a point.
