I have experienced a food revolution since discovering my childhood allergies never went away. I do not eat many common allergens and it required me to re-learn how to cook, how to shop, everything. I then moved to a town surrounded and supportive of organic farming and sustainable living, in order to emerge myself in a healthy environment. I then started reading Michael Pollan's novels and studying food chains.
What is left after taking away the dairy and wheat and chemicals and preservatives and additives and fillers? That is the question I had to ask the universe, and the universe replied QUITE A LOT!
I make nearly all my meals at home and do not really crave the foods I have allergies to when I am around people who eat differently. Most recently I started buying ingredients to make homemade Thai cuisine and several other Asian cuisines. Nearly all these recipes do not include dairy or wheat. I am in food heaven.
Many of my friends are used to my eating habits and actually love it when I cook for them. They do not feel they are missing out - They love what I make. I love feeding them - love helping tummies feel full and happy.
And finally after years, my tummy feels happy. It feels gurgly in a good way, like it is contentedly digesting the food and appreciatively putting it to good use. It no longer feels like my esophagus is on fire and that the food isn't going anywhere.
The food I eat defines my life in many ways. I once broke up with a boyfriend because his idea of picking a vegetable for dinner was canned green beans. I left him because he not only didn't support my lifestyle, but he didn't care what the food he ate was doing to him, and I couldn't handle not nagging him for it. I have a very difficult time being friends with people who do not get this concept. We generally eat at least 3 times a day so it is not something we are separable from. I am okay with it defining me and choosing my friends accordingly.
Latest greatest meal cooked at home:
I made late night vegetable tofu miso soup with all organic ingredients, thanks to having a well stocked kitchen. It was stealth and mini. I made and ate just two little bowls of miso.
I live in a farming community so I get large quantities of apples and other organic fruits and veggies to use in my dryer and juicer. I'm learning how to can and planning to do a batch of apple/carrot/ginger juice for cold season. It tastes so good though, I don't know how I will manage to save any! ;)
