SOUPER MAN Up next in our series of neighborly introductions is Robert, a HOMEGROWN Renaissance man from the chilly realm of Alberta, Canada. The guru behind the excellent blog Get Forked, Robert is a whiz in both the kitchen/garden and the A/V arenas: His clear, straightforward videos on topics including building a desktop aquaponics system and hand-pollinating tomatoes are incredibly easy to follow—in other words, just about perfect.
Lately Robert, who aims to grow and cook as much of his own food as possible (“Anything I can’t grow, I try to get local,” he says), has been into Korean barbecue. But our favorite how-to of his is for something far more basic, something every home cook should have plenty of stashed in the pantry: chicken stock, a recipe that’s calming, easy-going, and reassuring—sort of like Robert himself. And did we mention funny? On the topic of chicken bouillon, Robert says: “What's up with those dried cube thingies? Yuck. I want my chicken stock to actually taste like chicken.” Take a gander and see if you don’t agree.
Got a canning conundrum you want to run past Robert? Or just want to swap stock tips? Post a comment below or shoot him a message via his profile page. Hey, it’s one of our favorite things about HOMEGROWN—that we can sit down together over a couple of bowls of chicken soup, whether we’re in Alberta or Massachusetts or Texas or Oregon. Eat up, y’all. There’s always room for more.
What is Meet Your Neighbors? Most of us spend a fair amount of time tending our online gardens, but it’s easy to forget there’s a real person behind every quiche recipe, chicken inquiry, and hoophouse design here on HOMEGROWN. Well, nuts to that! MYN gives us a chance to meet over the back fence and shake hands. (Or maybe hug? We’re huggers. But no pressure.)
