Celebrate “culture” in agriculture & share skills like growing, cooking, canning

so, yes. our base maps and site assessments are "due," i think i said the 20th right? remember we will be building LOTS onto these over the next few months. this is just a start, an assessment, not a design. does everyone feel like they will be able to finish chapter 2 as well, or ought we to hold off on that until the week after?
i found a cool companion reader for the manual online, from Treeyo Permaculture. it's great to get another perspective on the material.

and don't forget that course outline i first linked to

i have referrenced it a few times as i read and found it useful. it's mostly a reiteration, but sometimes hearing something put a slightly different way can help.

oh, as far as HOW to get your assessments online.... i havent tried it yet, but there is an 'attach files' button under this reply box. hopefully that will work for everyone. those of you with a blog could post it there and leave us a link.
one more note, in case you are wondering how to get your paper map onto your computer. take a photo of the map. works pretty good. then put the photo and your write up into a jpg file and upload it here...
anyone more computer savvy than me with any better ideas or tweaks, PLEASE speak up!

It might be beneficial to me to push back the rest of Chapter 2 so I can finish up my site assessment.

Done with Chapt. 2 reading, but I'm scrambling to finish my survey.  My property is goofy and it's taken me forever to get stuff placed correctly.  I'm still gunning for the 20th!

I'm finishing chapter 2 tonight, but won't have my site assessment done by Tuesday.

My favorite bit of highlighted text from this chapter is:

The key principle to wise resource use is the principle of "enough".

Can I have an extension, professor? I'll have childcare galore with the grandparents around for the holiday weekend, so I'll crack the books then! Sorry for slacking! I was a "band widow" all weekend (husband/drummer recording a record) and had my hands full.

Oh, and as far as uploading documents: yes, the "attach files" button below is the way. I think as long as you stick with  Office- type programs, we should all be able to see what you're sharing. PDFs, JPGs, XL, Word, etc.

I've finished the chapter, but I'm pitifully behind with my site assessment.  I'm hoping the long Thanksgiving holiday will give me a chance to get everything put together

well, i like to think i would have finished my site assessment this morning, except that we just had a stack fire. no damage, but it was scary enough that i called the fire dept. quite an uproar, and meant that i had to wake my family up for the rukus instead of quietly drinking my coffee and writing up my last bits.
anyway, we'll just take the site surveys as they come in. chapter 2? ready to discuss?

I finished mine last night (haven't had a chance to finish the reading yet). I've attached it.

Here is my site map-not finished but coming along.

holy crap ladies! that is some impressive work! rachel, did you say you were a professional landscape designer? i hope so, or you are seriously showing us up! (by the way, i love how your backyard is accessed by a "man gate")
i just skimmed them both, will read thoroughly later. but wow! so inspiring!
to anyone who feels DE-inspired by the depth and professionalism of these surveys, don't worry. a hand drawn sketch and a page or two of description is okay too. though i myself have been finding that the more detail i research and write, the more detail i find i am compelled to research and write. it's sucking me down into a big hole! but it will be fun to have something as professional looking as rachel's when i'm done. (i hope)

Yes, I'm a professional landscape designer. :)

Yeah I'm getting caught up in the weeds, as it were, as well.  I really am nearly done and hope to post tonight.  My maps aren't as pretty as Rachel's, but I had fun doing them!

I agree CJ that the more I dig in, the more I find and then I want to find out more and more. It's like a black hole. This is an exciting process of learning about our properties and the areas we live in. I've learned so much and know there is so much more to come. I can't wait to continue to do more. We have only the map and some description due now right? I just got carried away with wanting to continue on early.  I noticed that I have a few holes that I've now filled in. I've already added 4 more pages tonight! I will finish the reading tomorrow also.
