How are you preparing your Urban Farm for the winter?
I have two 60 foot long tier type gardens. The top tier has seedless grapes growing across it - I didn't plant them, they were there when I bought the place. This year I plan on harvesting the grapes after the first or second good frost - heard that they are sweeter that way. Then I plan on talking my husband into digging them up and helping me transplant them along the three foot wood fencing in our front yard. Last year I planted three red dogwoods and three roses up there, thinking that my husband would help me transplant the grapes in the spring. Didn't happen and haven't seen the roses or dogwoods since the leaves came onto the grapes. :(
I have LOTS of tomatoes and peppers along the bottom tier that will probably be cut down this weekend. Then I plan on adding a cover crop to that tier. I also have a lot of sunflowers that my husband wants cut down, but I want to leave them up for the birds for the winter. My foundation plantings (mostly eatable landscaping)needs to be cut back, cleaned out and mulched for the winter.
My husband mowed for possibly the last time for the season. He still needs to roll up hoses, blow out sprinklers, and wrap up faucets before the real cold sets in.
I need to add a warm light to my chicken house. enclose my rabbit cages, and wrap potted plants.
Anything else I may have forgotten?
Just set up a community orchard/allotment in Belfast. I am now trying to find another site but its is really hard trying to find owners of unused land and to get there support. Any advice from you guys? It would probably be easier doing guerilla gardening but think it would be unlikely to get funding for that kind of project!
