Does anyone know about the safety of PVC pipe being used in a self-watering container?   The book that I have, The Urban Homestead, uses PVC pipe in its instructions, but it has been my understanding that PVC is not a safe plastic.  Am I wrong that the chemicals would leech into my water and therefore my tomatoes?

I don't know about leaching, but PVC is a regularly used material in household water pipes.
There are theories that PVC is harmful, and I remember the authors presenting a list of alternative materials on their blog. PVC is easy enough to avoid by using copper or aluminum pipe or drinking-safe garden hose. Good luck!
Good ideas, Cornelia!! I've always wondered about PVC.
Man, there's plenty of other things to worry about!

And aluminum might not be the safest alternative to pvc...
