Is their any housing tracks or roads being built or repaired near you if so you might let them now they can dump some dirt in your hole they may take you up on the idea saves them gas or space at their dump site

Lizz, we reposted your question over on HOMEGROWN's Facebook page. Here's the response so far (and folks unfamiliar with hugelkultur, mentioned below, should check out HOMEGROWN Life blogger Rachel's excellent post on the subject from last fall):

  • Tamara S Arndt We used tree debris and rocks that were left from cleaning up. She should try looking on Freecycle, or post a local ad in her area, asking for rocks, debris, and dirt. Around this time of year, you can find a lot of this for free.
  • Tamara S Arndt **Our hole was about 6 feet deep, and 10x8 feet wide. That was a couple of years ago, and the tree debris and rocks have worked.
  • Kate Miller call asplundht or one of those big tree companies- they are always looking for places to dump wood chips for free. Also check with your local highway department- they tend to do a lot of chipping this time of year!
