While the class is geared toward keeping dairy goats, most of the information is helpful for all goat keeping. The educator will be Patricia Garland Stewart, Executive Director of NCSC, but also the author of Personal Milkers: A Guide to Nigerian Dwarf Goat Keeping, and publisher of Ruminations: Celebrating the Small Farm Goat. The Stewarts have been raising goats for more than 15 years at their Hames & Axle Farm in Ashburnham, and have been offering one day workshops for many years.
The first class will be held on Thursday, Feb. 2, 2012 at 7:30 p.m. with a session on Goats Uses and Breeds. Each Thursday after that will have a different topic, which can be helpful on a “stand alone,” basis, though the entire course is also cohesive. Subsequent classes include Goat Conformation,
Goat Biology , Goat Nutrition & Veterinary Concerns, Breeding Choices, Birthing, Kid Care and Milk Handling, and Marketing Your Goats.
Classes cost $10/session for non-members and $8/session for NCSC members. If attending all seven classes, the cost is $60 for non-members and $48 for members. For more information about NCSC visit their website at www.northcountrysustain.org, or find them on Facebook. You can also reach Mrs. Stewart at 978-827-1305.
